Gif: a pronunciation dispute
So there seems to be a debate (and disagreement) about the pronunciation of GIF. Funny.
English is a language lacking consistency in the pronunciation of letters. Take the i in king and like. Same letter, different pronunciation. Same with the G: gin and gift (thanks @dannycalders – trust a multi-lingual Belgian to come up with the examples
).
So no wonder there is no straight line in pronouncing GIF. Steve Wilhite, who created the format, has declared it’s pronounced “jif” with a soft G. So what. You disagree? Keep calling it “gif” then. Or maybe “animated images showing funny things”. Bit of a mouthful, but that’s what they are at the end of the day.
