Google is opening up a new campus near Kings Cross station in London in 2016. To mark the event, our final graphic design assignment was to design something Google related. It could be anything, as long as it included Google at the centre of the idea.
Reading through Google’s philosophy a few things are clear. Google is about search and information. Personally I don’t think I could do my job without Google’s search engine. However it has a major flaw. If it’s not on the web, you’re not going to find it. For example:
- Where are the car keys?
- What is my home insurance policy number?
- Where is the other matching sock of all the odd socks in the world? (For the record: I don’t have an odd sock problem, but I know many other people do).
The answer to all of these questions can be found in your house, but none of it can be accessed by a search engine to give you quick results.
So my answer to this is Google House. A small black box you place in your house anywhere inside the wifi range. As soon as it is switched on it will index everything in your house. It will read all your books, scan all your images, locate all your clothes, make in inventory of all the food in the cupboards, fridge and freezer, … within an hour or so of installing it will know it all. And it will keep knowing it all every time you eat something, buy something new, or throw something out.
You will be able to access all that data through a simple app on your smartphone.
